In 1962, Desmond Morris conducted an experiment where monkeys were given a reward for producing artwork. Over time, the quality of the artwork diminished, until the monkeys were doing the bare minimum to get the reward.
Whether the reward is praise or money, this is something I have to be cautious of. It gives me new appreciation of the term “art for art’s sake.”
